Saints Aquila and Priscilla: The Exemplar of Christian Marriage and Ministry
Saints Aquila and Priscilla Apostles: Today we commemorate the memory of the Holy Apostles, the pious couple from Pontus who inextricably linked their lives with the Apostle of the Nations, Paul, and sacrificed themselves for the faith of Christ.
The Meeting with Apostle Paul in Corinth
Saints Aquila and Priscilla, Jews by origin, lived in Corinth where they practiced the profession of tentmakers. They were virtuous people who, upon welcoming Apostle Paul to their city, did not merely offer him warm hospitality, but were deeply impressed by his preaching.
Having been catechized and baptized, the fiery word of the Apostle touched their souls so deeply that they decided to abandon their daily lives and follow him on his missionary journeys as his valuable assistants.
The Gratitude of the Churches and Martyrdom
Their Christian activity and virtues were so great that Apostle Paul mentions them with emotion in his epistles. He characteristically states that for their services and courage, he owes them gratitude, not only himself but all the churches of the nations.
Their earthly journey concluded in martyrdom. The persecutors of Christianity arrested them and led them to decapitation, granting them the double crown: that of the Apostles and that of the Martyrs.
Note: Saint Aquila is also celebrated on July 14th.
