K. Karamanlis: National Debt the Support of the Agricultural World

The immediate need to implement a comprehensive national plan for the support needed by the agricultural world was highlighted by former Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis. In a speech with a strong social and national sign, he warned that the margins for intervention are narrowing, calling for broader consensus for the salvation of the Greek countryside.

Speaking at the event for the 75 years of KEOSOE, Kostas Karamanlis described the “unbearable reality” experienced by producers, as a result of international crises but also chronic domestic pathologies. The pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis acted as catalysts, skyrocketing production costs and threatening the viability of small and medium-sized holdings.

The former Prime Minister criticized the “reckless” decisions of the E.U. regarding the energy transition, while he focused particularly on the structural problems of Greece: the fragmented land, the demographic aging of the agricultural population and the low level of technical training. He even noted the example of Germany in the energy autonomy of farmers, emphasizing the need for investments in photovoltaics and modern forms of cooperativism.

“Strong Greece cannot exist without an economically prosperous and productively flourishing and vibrant Region,” he characteristically stated, proposing specific solutions such as low-interest loans for the young, the reintegration of idle lands and investment in the education of new producers.
