ELSTAT: Dramatic drop in births in Greece in 2025 – Below 66,000

ELSTAT: Dramatic drop in births in 2025: The birth rate in the country continues to move at historically low levels, confirming the intense demographic problem. According to the provisional statistical data announced by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) for the period January – December 2025, live births in the Greek territory showed a new, noticeable decrease compared to the previous year.

Specifically, live births in Greece during the year 2025 amounted to 65,594 (33,620 boys and 31,974 girls). In 2024, the corresponding number was 68,467 (35,216 boys and 33,251 girls), which translates to a decrease of 2,873 births, i.e., a percentage of -4.2%. In addition, stillbirths during the year 2025 amounted to 420, recording a decrease of 7.5% compared to 2024, when 454 had been recorded.

This specific publication is part of ELSTAT’s series of statistics under development, within the framework of the process of adaptation to the requirements of the new Regulation (EU) 2025/2458 of the European Parliament and of the Council on European statistics on population and housing. Corresponding publications are scheduled to be carried out by ELSTAT on a quarterly basis, until the implementation date of the aforementioned Regulation, which has been set for January 1, 2028.

These data are compiled within the framework of the Vital Statistics of Population (VSP) survey and come from the Civil Registries of the Municipal Authorities, according to the events that have been declared and registered up to the date of their transmission, while late registrations are subsequently integrated based on the date of the event.

The main decreases, in absolute values, are recorded for the age groups:

  • 30 to 34 years old (12,356 births),

  • 25 to 29 years old (7,922 births) and

  • 35 to 39 years old (4,597 births).

The main increases are observed for the age groups:

  • 40 to 44 years old (1,031 births) and

  • 45 to 49 years old (445 births).

MONTHLY BIRTH DATA: January – December 2025 The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announces provisional statistical data reflecting the monthly evolution of births for the period January – December 2025. The data refer to live births that took place in the Greek territory during the period in question. The publication is part of ELSTAT’s series of statistics under development, within the framework of the process of adaptation to the requirements of the new Regulation (EU) 2025/2458 of the European Parliament and of the Council on European statistics on population and housing. Corresponding publications are scheduled to be carried out by ELSTAT on a quarterly basis, until the implementation date of the aforementioned Regulation, which has been set for January 1, 2028, when the framework of publications will be re-examined.

The data included in this publication are compiled within the framework of the Vital Statistics of Population (VSP) survey and come from data transmitted by the Civil Registries of the Municipal Authorities according to the birth events that have been declared and registered up to the date of their transmission. Late birth registrations transmitted to ELSTAT are integrated, after their submission, into the date of the event.

According to these data, live births in Greece during the year 2025 amounted to 65,594 (33,620 boys and 31,974 girls), compared to 68,467 (35,216 boys and 33,251 girls) in 2024, recording a decrease of 2,873 births (-4.2%). Stillbirths during the year 2025 amounted to 420, recording a decrease of 7.5% compared to the previous year, where 454 stillbirths were recorded (Tables 1 and 3).
